The work composed during the Open-Studio Exhibition Series at Osaka Arts-Aporia in the Osaka Harbor Red Brick Warehouse in June, 2004 as "Sound Art Lab 2004 [1] Sound Exhibition - Exhibition for the Composition" is going to release on CD.

It reaches the 36th CD album of Koji Asano, and now since it becomes the first CD after he migrated from Spain to Japan. 50 minutes 55 seconds long one track master piece was done in Artist-in-Residence program for a week in the humid summer, set up the grand piano and the sound system in an huge empty warehouse on reclaimed land.

A peculiar sound characteristic of the warehouse was made the best use of, the microphones collected sounding piano with many type of reflections, and it amplified, computer processed, and piano was reproduced by the speakers, and microphones again recorded all elements together. The depth that couldn't tell the distinction of mere piano sound or computer digital sound made up an unique sound scenery.

Concentrating all nerves for full-four hours every day to compose were opened to the public, he received the inspiration of moisture and the sea breeze, while vibrating the Osaka harbor warehouse by a large volume and he completed a large integrated work of the grand piano and computer sound.

Your Message to Koji

A delightful and intoxicating experience. Koji Asano composed "Sanctuary on Reclaimed Land" during the Open-Studio Exhibiton series which took place in Osaka Arts-Aporia, on June 2004. In a huge warehouse located in the harbor area of Osaka city, Asano counts on seven days of an artist-in-residence program and the endless humidity of the maritime environment, to carry out one of the most amazing works of his abundant production. After an initial
part of the recording which the composer use to clearly introduce the protagonists of this sound adventure; that is to say, a piano, the acoustic characteristics of the performance space and the technological resource as a sound transforming tool, Asano submerges us in an immeasurable ocean of deafening confusion and singular beauty. As it happened previously ("Preparing for April" -solstice 013-, "The End of August" -solstice 022- or "January Rainbow" -solstice 027-), the piano becomes again the only instrumental alibi to produce an electroacoustic composition in which prevails an acoustic exploration of that venue by means of the continuous generation of vibrating piles. That is so, throughout the long fifty minutes, we attend to a murmuring challenge of meandering development and its main virtue resides in an effective distribution of the range of resonances obtained by the collection and transformation of the sound material. "Sanctuary on Reclaimed Land" is the most recent creation by the Japanese composer and artist, and his thirty six release on the Solstice label. - Ferran Cuadras, Arsonal
